Dehcontee Liberian Dance Company, Inc. (Dehcontee) Mission Statement is to enhance public knowledge and appreciation of the ethnic traditions of Liberian culture through dances, songs, drumming and plays. Dehcontee, which means, "Everything has time" (in the Kru and Bassa languages of Liberia, West Africa), is the only Oakland-based Liberian dance company. Dehcontee was founded in 1992 by a group of Liberians headed by the former Liberian National Culture Director. Since its inception, Dehcontee has been volunteered staffed and operated. Dehcontee was incorporated in 1994 and has acquired a repertoire of dances, plays and songs. Dehcontee is successfully executing its Mission Statement/Purpose of enhancing communities in Oakland knowledge and appreciation of Liberian culture by performing at Oakland Carijama, Festival at the Lake, Dehcontee’s annual Panafest, Dehcontee’s annual Summer Dance Program, Africa-In Concert, schools, churches and other Oakland community based affairs. Dehcontee has also performed at other events including the California State Fair, the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, California Arts Council Asilamar Conference and at other in and out of state events. Dehcontee has established a professional Liberian Dance Company and is gaining recognition for her dedication to delivering the Liberian Culture to her community.
