Narwale F. Washington Narwale F. Washington migrated to the United States from Liberia in 1990 due to the frightful civil war. She began her studies at the Encina High School in Sacramento, California and later transferred to South High School in Worcester, MA where she successfully graduated. While in High School, she participated in sports, after school programs, multicultural programs and many other extra curricular activities, which earned her many awards, medals and trophies. She currently attends school at California State University Sacramento where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Ms. Washington is a natural humanitarian, as the matter of fact; she joined Dehcontee Liberian Dance Company a non-profit organization in 1998 for the sole purpose of maintaining her culture so that she can help educate others about Liberia’s beautiful culture. Since her membership, she has been actively running summer youth programs, after school programs, special training programs with high school students, multicultural programs and Black history month programs. Ms. Washington is currently the premier coordinator of the annual Miss Liberia-California beauty pageant which helps young women exhibit their skills and talents in a holistic manner, exposes and teaches Liberian youths in America about the Liberian culture, helps raise the self-esteem of the participants, as well as mentor and counsel them. She believes that the youths are the future and if we as a community work alongside organizations like S.A.D.O.L to create a panel where youths can discuss psychological, political, social and educational issues that affect them, we can promote respect for self and others, discipline, and create responsible community members. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling and hanging out with family and friends. She also enjoys decorating, cleaning and rearranging her home. Ms. Washington dreams of returning home to Liberia soon, but most importantly, she dreams of providing a home of peace, freedom, love and opportunities for young people. Ms. Washington wishes to accomplish that dream through the help of Sons and Daughters of Liberia. |
